The Banded Seaperch has four dark bands crossing the body and large, bulging eyes on top of the head. The base colour is variable from whitish to yellow, green or red. This species grows to 30 cm in length.
It lives on coastal rocky reefs to depths of 30 m.
The Banded Seaperch is endemic to Australia. It occurs from northern New South Wales, around the temperate south of the country, including Tasmania, to south-western Western Australia .
